The Georgetown Loop RR Tour

The Georgetown Loop RR opens on March 23rd for the 2024 season and will run on weekends only throughout March and April. After May 4th, we will be doing morning and afternoon train tours daily. Please call 970.468.7777 for details.

The Historic Georgetown Loop

Our most popular mountain railroad adventure is the historic Georgetown Loop Railroad tour. From late April to early January, we feature daily excursions to the “Silver Queen of the Rockies,”… Georgetown, CO. This railroad traces its heritage all the way back to the booming silver rush days of the 1880’s, when tons of rich minerals were freighted down the tracks through Clear Creek Canyon to the smelters of Denver.

Just getting to Georgetown's Devil's Gate train station (named after a very intriguing rock formation that your driver will point out) is a unique adventure. Your tour guide will feature a brief intermission high atop the snowy peaks of Loveland Pass at 11,990 feet above sea level. You can even have a mid-July snowball fight! The splendor of the Continental Divide is on full display as we present a photographic opportunity for all of you shutterbugs that bankrupts the English language with its raw beauty.

Devil's Gate Train Station

Upon arrival at the Devil's Gate train station, our drivers present each Alpenglow Adventures passenger with a complimentary water bottle and sunscreen lotion prior to boarding. Next, smile for the camera as your driver/photographer clicks a close-up shot of you and your compadres on the scenic Clear Creek bridge. Then board the historic narrow-gauge train and choose between the sun-splashed open-air rail cars for taking the best photos or the roofed open-air cars for maximum comfort!

Spectacular Views of Clear Creek

With three blasts from the steam whistle, your journey begins. Ride in comfort and style as the powerful turn-of-the-century locomotive chugs through lush forests of blue spruce and lodgepole pine. And keep your camera ready as the railroad crosses the thunderous waters of Clear Creek eight times!

From its birth at the top of the Continental Divide to the majestic waterfalls beneath the High Bridge, Clear Creek is what inspired treasure seekers to "go west, young man, go west and grow up with the country." Chock full of gold flakes and nuggets, this vibrant waterway runs cold and clear all year long and enthralls rail passengers with its sparkling vistas and thunderous acoustics.

1880’s-era Silver Mine

Then, explore the 1880’s Lebanon silver mine, escorted by a seasoned and knowledgeable tour guide. This expedition will amaze and delight you with the visual history of deep-rock mining and the early frontier lifestyle. If you’re eagle-eyed, you might even find a silver nugget or two, still nestled in the landscape. Many of our guests have claimed that this mine tour was far and away the most unique experience of their entire Colorado vacation!

95-foot High Bridge

After the hour-long silver mine tour, re-board the train and experience the awesome views from the High Bridge as the train completes a 360º loop above Georgetown. This is the only operating railroad in all of North America that makes a complete loop upon itself in the open air to gain altitude! In so doing, you are suspended 95 feet above the valley floor with the echoes of the train whistle bouncing off the mountain walls. Hold on to your hats!

When the “iron horse” returns you to the picturesque Devil's Gate train station, its time for the next big adventure--- Lunch! But not just any noon-time meal! No, we take you to Georgetown Park for a delicious lunchtime interlude in the Victorian Gazebo in the center of this mountain town oasis.

Entertainment & Mountain Picnic

Featuring a world-class playground for the young and the young at heart for your pre-lunch entertainment, we then spread an all-you-can-eat picnic lunch in the warm Rocky Mountain sunshine. Scooter's Smokehouse BBQ

On those rare occasions when cold and rainy weather becomes an issue, we are proud to switch gears and bring the noontime feast inside at Scooter's Smokehouse BBQ in Georgetown. Featuring true South Texas-style brisket, pork, chicken and ribs, Scooter's is a taste sensation that will have you smackin' your lips with delight! A $20.00 credit per person goes a long way towards filling your bellies with savory bites of tender barbeque. Yee-haw!

Downtown Historic Georgetown

After filling your bellies with great food, your driver then performs an impromptu magic show, featuring some of the younger guests on the tour as the magician's apprentices… complete with prizes for all the youngsters! Before leaving the park, we commemorate the fun with a relaxing photo opportunity at the recently restored frontier gazebo, for one of the most endearing family settings in America. So don’t forget to bring your video camera and be ready to capture some once-in-a-lifetime footage.

If your time and budget is somewhat limited, we can still make the best outdoor adventure in the Rockies part of your agenda. In a compact 4 hour timeframe, your family can get direct door-to-door van service, take a round-trip ride on the train and, sure enough, still manage to stop in downtown Georgetown long enough to slurp those delicious FREE ice cream treats!
